St Just

St Just is a town and civil parish in the Penwith district of Cornwall, England. It lies along the B3306 road which connects St Ives to the A30 and Lands End.

Fred Yates moved to Boswedden Cottage on the road to Cape Cornwall just outside St Just in 1985. It was the perfect location for Fred, on the outskirts of town but with the seclusion necessary for him to work and surrounded by endless subject matter for artistic inspiration. Indeed with Cape Cornwall, Cott Valley and St just right there and St Ives, Sennen, Lamorna, Penberth and Mousehole to name a few, all close by, Yates was spoilt for choice for beautiful locations.

From his Cape Cornwall base Fred was able to stay local or jump on public transport to a location slightly further afield. If painting large canvases Fred would often leave them  with someone to dry and then collect at a later date. Smaller works could be carried home while still wet.

During his time at St Just, Lamorna Cove and Sennen Cove were two of Fred Yates favourite locations to paint. Numerous works were completed from all different vantage points and in different colour palettes capturing the beauty of his beloved scenes.
